Vinegar that surprises---Pinakurat
The lucky few who had managed to get a taste of it when they vacationed home bought boxes of sukang Pinakurat to bring as pasalubong but they had the misfortune of having their precious cargo severely cut down to size by airport authorities.
The decline of Stuart del Rosario’s health is attributed by some to his indulgence of a famous local dish called pinakurat, which is made of chopped baboy sulop (wild boar meat) soused in vinegar and spices. Penniless and sick, he went to Manila to get a heart by-pass operation as an indigent patient.
After a successful operation, Stuart del Rosario returned home with what was left of the already meager funds donated to him by concerned relatives and friends. With wife Donna, 51, and four sons to support, Stuart del Rosario was at the lowest point of his life.
Linguistics Professor at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Dr. Luvizminda Cagas de la Cruz, says “pinakurat” is an affixation of the Sebuano (correct spelling instead of “Cebuano” according to language scholars) root word “kurat.” “Kurat,” according to De la Cruz, means surprise. Thus, “pinakurat” means in a sudden or surprising manner as to shock the person.
Because of the undeniable success of sukang Pinakurat, Green Gold Gourmet will now move from a micro cottage industry status to either small or medium enterprise in an effort to cope with the public demand.
Green Gold Gourmet’s response to this public demand of a famous product spawned 14 other creations to date, among them: Suka Waykurat (the milder version of sukang Pinakurat); Kuratsoy (Pinakurat blended with soy sauce and calamansi); Sweetened Pinakurat; Chigar (chili garlic sauce); Naprik (spicy pork alamang); Kulikot (flaming-hot chili pepper sauce); Pure Suka Tuba; Garlic Chips; and Garlic Crunch.
“Westerners are adapting to the taste. To them it is exotic,” he says.
There are also plans to export the family products to the Middle East as soon as Green Gold Gourmet gets its halal certification.
But all the talk of exporting is overshadowed by the fact that the company has yet to receive its license to operate and its certificate of product registry from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD). Peppo though is confident they will get the license to operate very soon.
“We are actually just waiting for it to be issued by the end of the month,” he says. “The BFAD already inspected our production facilities and was satisfied,” he adds.
The BFAD approval is important to Green Gold Gourmet because it is the only thing preventing it from realizing the product potential of sukang Pinakurat.
Already, notable giants in the retail industry in the Philippines like Shoemart (SM), Mercury Drug, 7/11 and Rustan’s have signified their intentions to carry the Pinakurat as part of their in-house brand lines.
Today, Green Gold Gourmet’s products can be found in stores in Metro Manila, and the cities of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iligan.
“But who knows, maybe very soon, makurat ka (you’ll be surprised) to find our products in your favorite mall or the sari-sari store,” Peppo says.

Tree Man
An Indonesian fisherman who is "half man half tree" has been offered new hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A. 32-year-old Dede, who lives in a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, feared that he would be killed by the tree-like growths that cover his body. Known locally as 'Tree Man' his condition has baffled local doctors for 20 years. He has root like structures growing out of his body - branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and which protrude from his hands and feet, and welts covering his whole body.In an attempt to earn a living to support his family, he is part of a circus troupe, displaying his Tree Man limbs along with others afflicted with skin deformities in 'freak' shows. The former fisherman was the subject of a documentary "Half Man Half Tree", part of the "My Shocking Story" series on Discovery Channel TV. Dede's story began when wart-like "roots" started growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. The medical world was completely baffled. The welts spread rapidly across his body and soon he was not able to carry out ordinary household tasks.Dede was sacked from his job and deserted by his wife. He has been raising two children, now in their late teens, in poverty. He is resigned to the fact that local doctors have no cure for his condition. To try to support his family he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience along with victims of other peculiar diseases. While he has the support of his extended family, he has frequently been a target of ridicule and abuse in rural fishing village where he lives. But now new hope has emerged for Dede after an American dermatology expert flew out to his home village south of the capital Jakarta.Dr. Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland claims to have identified Dede's condition, and has proposed a treatment that could completely change his life.Following the testing of samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr. Gaspari says his condition is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system. This means his body is unable to contain the warts.According to Dr. Gaspari, the virus was able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", instructing them to produce huge amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on both his hands and feet. The doctor became involved in the case through the Discovery Channel documentary, and he is convinced that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been demonstrated to stop the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.Dr. Gaspari said that Dede's warts should reduce in size to the point where he can use his hands. He said he had never seen anything like this in his entire career.

Akon
Background
He is the son of the Senegalese percussionist Mor Thiam. He is a Muslim born in St. Louis, Missouri, but grew up in Senegal until he was 7, split time between Senegal and America until he was 15, and then permanently moved to Jersey City, New Jersey. He recorded his first song, "Operations of Nature," at the age of fifteen. He was then subsequently jailed for armed robbery and drug distribution charges, and used his time in prison to work on his music. Upon release, Akon began writing and recording tracks in his home studio. The tapes found their way to SRC/Universal, which released Akon's debut LP Trouble in June 2004. The album is a hybrid of Akon's silky, West African-styled vocals mixed with East Coast and Southern beats. Most of Akon's songs begin with the sound of the clank of a jail cell with him uttering the word "Konvict."
Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri instead of Senegal because his family didn't want him to go through the immigration process. Part of the reason for Akon moving to America was for Akon to pursue a career in basketball, but he injured his knee and was forced to quit. He still enjoys basketball and soccer. He currently splits time residing between Atlanta, Georgia and Dakar, Senegal .
In late 2005, his long time friend and manager Robert Montanez, who Akon referred to as a brother, was killed in a drive-by shooting; the album Konvicted is dedicated to him. Akon was also in the car and was shot in the shoulder, however he made a full recovery.
Akon is of the Muslim faith, it has been reported that he is both a believer and practitioner of polygamy, though such reports are unconfirmed, as Akon has not given a straight answer to questions about the matter. Polygamy is illegal in the United States of America. He claims to have five children with three different women in an interview with Blender.
In 2006, he ventured to Africa to play a concert in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Crocodile Park & Butterfly Garden in Davao City
Here is a photo of an adult and matured butterfly.
After visiting the Butterfly Garden, we went to Crocodile Park. We toured and seen the different animals in the Park. The additional attraction in that park was the 2 big tigers. They were so clean and well fed. The crocodiles were just sleeping with an open mouth. They have also the birds, chicken and etc. Students from the PWC ignore the heat of the sun, they were very happy and enjoying every moment spent in the Park. Here are the Photos taken by me and Keisha's Dad in Croc Park.
